Here at AidData, we're constantly pursuing new sources of data on emerging and non-traditional donors outside the OECD-DAC. Obviously, one of the most important new players in international development is China. As we mentioned a couple weeks ago, Chinese aid has important ramifications for donors and recipient countries alike. While we've already gathered a significant amount of data on Chinese aid from 1990-2005, we're continuing to think creatively about how we can gather more information on China's international development activities. We'll be tracking news stories, blog postings, and official reports on Chinese aid and investment projects week by week here on The First Tranche. Without further ado, here's what happened in the last week on Chinese development finance.
- The China Development Bank offers the Bolivian government a $15 billion loan to develop the El Mutun iron ore deposit. The work will be done by a joint venture company between Chung Hsing Mining and a Bolivian government corporation
- China's EXIM Bank is loaning Ecuador over $1.5 billion to construct the Central Coca Codo Sinclaire hydroelectric plant. Sinohydro, a Chinese company involved in numerous other hydroelectric ventures in Africa and Latin America, will take the lead on this venture.
- The Ministry of Commerce is providing a grant of $2.9 million to Armenia for "technical-economic cooperation projects"
- China signs cooperation agreements with Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan
- Chinese food aid to Nepal is stranded at the border, where the Nepali government is apparently ignoring the shipment
- Meanwhile, over at Forbes' The China Tracker, Ray Tsuchiyama highlights the human resource boom that will develop as scholarship programs educate thousands of African students in Chinese universities and technical schools.
